SASKATCHEWAN CRAFT COUNCIL DIMENSIONS 2006 AWARD WINNERS
The Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to announce the following award winners for Dimensions 2006, the annual, open, juried exhibition of Saskatchewan Fine Craft. The awards were presented at a gala ceremony and reception on Friday, May 26, 7 pm at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. A representative brought greetings from the Provincial Government and presented the Premier's Prize sponsored by the Department of Culture, Youth and Recreation. This prestigious award for the outstanding entry was given to Elizabeth M. Cuming from Saskatoon for her quilt created for the province's centenary entitled, Historic Saskatchewan.
The Jane Turnbull Evans Award for Innovation in Craft, sponsored by the Saskatchewan Arts Board was presented to Dianne Douglas from Saskatoon for her quilted hanging, Lives of Girls & Women. This piece also received the Award for Excellence in Quilting donated by the Saskatoon Quilters Guild. Spring Melt by Mel Bolen from Humboldt was honoured with the Corinne McKay Merit Award, and Cathryn Miller from Grasswood received the SCC Merit Award for her 'altered' book, Universe. Both these awards are sponsored by the Saskatchewan Craft Council and are for SCC members.
The award for Excellence in Surface Design sponsored by Traditions Handcraft Gallery went to Michael Hosaluk from Saskatoon for his painted wooden, Bowl of Strange Fruit. Donovan Chester from Regina was presented with The Artisans' Craft Market Cooperative Award for Excellence in Craft for his covered clay piece, Delta Jar. The Saskatchewan Woodworkers' Guild Award for Excellence in Wood went to Jamie Russell from Vanscoy for his maple burl carving called Grebe Courtship Bowl. Cal Ganshorn's knife, Damascus Dagger, received the Award for Excellence in Metal sponsored by the Saskatchewan Knifemakers Guild. Ganshorn is from Regina.
Morley Maier from Yorkton won the Award for Excellence in Functional and Production Ware donated by Cecilia Cote for his set of Willow Baskets. The wheel thrown, altered piece, Sketches of a Pot, by Jody Greenman-Barber from Buena Vista was honoured by the TREE Award for Excellence in Clay. The Saskatchewan Weavers & Spinners Guild Award for Excellence in Textiles went to Jane A. Evans from Grandora for her textile landscape called Golden Stream. The Town of Battleford carried on their long-standing support for Dimensions by selecting Tri-pointed Bowl by Zane Wilcox from Saskatoon for their Purchase Award this year.
Dimensions 2006 is on display at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in the T.C. Douglas Building, 3475 Albert Street, Regina, from May 6 to August 27, 2006.
