Guilty Pleasures

Julianna Zwierciadlowska-Rhymer

Exhibition Dates: November 8, 2025 - January 17, 2026

Reception: November 8, 2025 2:00 pm - 5 pm

In this solo exhibition at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery, Manitoba artist Julianna Zwierciadlowska-Rhymer presents a striking installation of ceramic desserts, fibre tapestries, and self-portrait photographs. At first, her pastel cake-like ceramic sculptures appear luxurious and inviting. However, a closer look reveals unsettling and sometimes grotesque details designed to prompt reflection and discomfort.

Created during residencies at Medalta and Banff Centre for Arts, as well as during her studies at Emily Carr University and the University of Manitoba, Julianna’s work uses dark humour to explore our complicated relationship with food. She highlights how food can bring comfort and cultural connection, while also reminding us of the guilt, excess, and waste tied to overconsumption. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on where our food comes from, how it is produced, and our growing distance from the realities of industrial food systems in the Western world.
