Market Dates: Friday, Nov 2, 1 - 9pm; Saturday, Nov 3, 10am - 6pm; Sunday, Nov 4, 10am - 5pm
Adults - $5, Seniors - $2, Children under 12 are Free

They are off!
Remember the scene from Rocky – Sylvestre Stallone dancing triumphantly at the top of the steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Now imagine Melvyn Malkin, Megan C. Broner, Rod and Denyse Simair doing the victory dance right in that same spot. From November 8 to 11, they will be in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. This is one of the three largest and most prestigious Fine Craft shows in the United States. (To give you an idea of the event – “preview tickets” that give a few hours advance viewing sell for $1,500 a piece)

The Philadelphia Show is one of the primary shows for collectors and gallery owners in the United States. This creates an opportunity for you. While there, Melvyn, Megan, Rod and Denyse will be distributing a catalogue and other promotional material that is intended to drive traffic to the Fine Craft Guide. If you act quickly, it’s not too late to get some benefit from their generosity. Call Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or email: scc.editor@sasktel.net to get onto the Guide. And, for those of you who are already there, make sure your site is presenting as you want it. Important eyes may be looking at you soon. Check out details of the event at http://pmacraftshow.org/

Dimensions
A reminder that the 2008 Dimensions will have the theme of "Growth". All entries will be juried on the twin criteria of excellence and on the treatment of this theme. The application material will be sent out in the New Year, but it is not too early to begin thinking about your Dimensions: Growth entry. For more information, see http://www.saskcraftcouncil.org/activities.php

EXPO 2008
Expo will be in Saskatoon in April. If you would like to be considered for participation this year, please let Les or Judy know by Nov 13. Contact: Exhibitions & Education Coordinators

Korea Calling
The Cheongju International Craft Biennale, South Korea, is a series of exhibitions, competitions, fairs and symposiums of national and international craft works throughout the month of October. With the participation of nearly 3,000 artists from 60 different countries, the event carries great significance and promotes knowledge of the "Jikji", the oldest metal printing panel (which predates the Gutenberg version by 78 years). Craft is celebrated and honoured in an astonishing number of events throughout the span of the Biennale. The event draws over 500,000 visitors from around the world.

Canada has been asked to be the Guest country for the 2009 show. They are looking for marketers, exhibitions, demonstrations, academic exchanges and more. Of particular interest to the Koreans is the contrast between the individualized practice and innovation of Canadians and the traditional, inter-generational practice more typical of Asia.

The Canadian Craft Federation will be taking the lead in organizing Canada's participation. Planning is just now getting underway - so if you've got any ideas on what might be included, call Mark at 653.3616 ext. 27, and think big. A delegation from the Canada just returned from a fact-finding visit to the 2007 show. They report that this event is unlike anything in North America in terms of its size, impact, level of organization, budget, and capacity. As a reference point - the physical area being made available to Canada as guest country is a larger square footage than that taken up by Wintergreen. In terms of the impact of the event on the city of Cheongju - Tom McFall of the Alberta Craft Council reports that "it's like the Calgary Stampede going on in Calgary - except it makes the Stampede seem chintzy and poorly organized."

FINE CRAFT AUCTION
The Fine Craft Auction that we held in Saskatoon last February was so promising that we are doing it again. Twice. This February, we will be holding a Fine Craft Auction both in Regina and Saskatoon. Details will follow, but it is not to early to start thinking about which piece or pieces you might want to submit. Remember, this is an artist friendly auction – reserve bids will be established (by you) and you will receive 50% of the sales price from the piece.

Opportunities & News
Are you interested in a small resort market?
The operator of the Land of the Loon resort at Anglin Lake (just south of the Prince Albert National Park (PANP) has raised with us the idea of a small Craft market at the resort in late August. The market would be aimed at reaching cottagers, tourists, and other visitors to the PANP/Emma/Anglin/Christopher Lake area. This idea is very unformed as yet, but we are interested in learning whether there is any interest (conceptually, at least) in participating in a small, cheap, low key resort area market at the end of the summer. Please give Mark a call at 653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail scc.director@sasktel.net if this is of potential interest to you.

Election 2007 & the Arts
Saskatchewan Arts Alliance interviewed the Liberal, NDP and Saskatchewan parties about their plans for the arts sector if elected.

While all parties agreed that artists invaluably contribute to the quality of life, attract new residents and businesses to the province and are interested in working cooperatively with artists and arts organizations, they had differing ideas on what they would do if elected. For more details, read the interviews which can be accessed at www.artsalliance.sk.ca.

Ottawa, October 26, 2007 Media ReleaseThe Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) is proud to introduce four new panelists who will enrich the discussions during the Symposium on the Role of Arts and Culture in Canadian Public Diplomacy, being held on Nov 22, 2007 at Université du Québec à Montréal, Sherbrooke Pavilion, which is located at 200 Sherbrooke Street West.

The Symposium will begin with a panel on the role of arts and culture in Canadian public diplomacy with Bill Graham, former Foreign Affairs Minister, Marcel Masse, former Communications Minister and Judith Marcuse, dancer and choreographer and producer from Vancouver. This discussion will initiate a dialogue between the diplomatic, the political and the artistic perspectives on this issue and will provide a basis for the ensuing round tables.

The second panel of the day will be enriched by the presence of Diane Wilhelmy, former Québec high official in the diplomacy sector. This round table will explore several public diplomacy models and will gather experts from Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. To complete this portrait of public diplomacy, it is important to add a voice from Québec that has always been very active in this field.

For more details please refer to the Symposium’s Website at: http://ccarts.ca/en/events/SYMPOSIUM2007EN.htm
