ALERT READER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations ONCE AGAIN to the "King of Korrection," Charley Farrero, the winner of yet another "Alert Reader of the Week" award. If you see what you consider to be a typo, send it to Colin Wallace, Publications Coordinator. Last edition's typo was in the "Bazaart" paragraph, "biggist"; it obviously should have read, "biggest".

WELCOME NEW SCC MEMBERS

We are delighted to introduce you to our newest members, and where appropriate, we will share some new member profiles to help you to get acquainted. This week, we are pleased to welcome the following new member of the SCC:

  • Dr. Lourdes Heber

NEWS OF THE WEEK

LET'S PARTY!!!!!!!!

The Alberta Craft Council has come up with a format for a very successful series of Studio Parties – which are great fun, build the Craft community, and provide exposure for Craft people.

Good ideas are meant to be copied.

Here’s how the studio parties work:

  • Craftspeople with studio space or studio space/homes that are suitable for parties agree to host the party (and determine the number of people that makes the party “just right” for their space).
  • The Craft Council sells tickets to the party for $20. All proceeds are given to the hosting artist to pay for wine, food, and the other expenses.
  • The format of the party is up to the host – it can include a demonstration, an exhibition, live music or other entertainment, or just good food and conversation.
  • Tickets are marketed to potential buyers and others interested in Craft. It has proven to be a very good way to build exposure in a modest, targeted way.

We’d like to give this concept a try in the fall. If you are interested in exploring being a studio party host, give Mark a call at 653.3616, ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@shaw.ca.

His worship, Mayor Don Atchinson, as well as representatives from the Broadway Improvement District, and the Saskatoon School Board addressed a crowd of school children and general public. Karen's plaques are permanently installed on the foundation of the stone stage outside of the Victoria school on Broadway Avenue.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCC MEMBERS

MARKETING OPPORTUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES [Download PDF Application Form]
The SCC, with the support of the Trade Routes Program of Heritage Canada, is offering a unique marketing opportunity to Saskatchewan Fine Craft Artists who are interested in receiving exposure in the United States market.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is the most prestigious exhibition of Fine Craft art in the United States. The annual event (running November 8 to 11) attracts 24,000 high-income and influential patrons drawn from all the major financial and cultural centers along the Atlantic Seaboard. It draws a large contingent of commercial gallery operators searching for new artists and work.

This year, Canada is the “guest country” at this show. A total of 24 Canadian Fine Craft artists will be in attendance, including SCC members Melvyn Malkin, Megan Broner and Rod & Denyse Simair. These individuals have generously agreed to distribute marketing material promoting Saskatchewan Fine Craft to gallery owners and collectors visiting their booths.

We will be producing a very special, glossy red, attention-getting 9” x 9” catalogue promoting a maximum of 20 Saskatchewan Fine Craft artists and their work (in addition to the three participants).

If you want to be included in this exquisite publication, please complete the attached application form and return it to Mark by noon, Monday July 9th (e-mail: scc.director@shaw.ca; fax 306.244.2711). This is a firm deadline – no applications will be accepted after this time.

Participating artists will receive a full page in the publication. This will include a representation of a sample of work, a picture of the artist in an action pose “working” with a completed piece, a short artist’s statement, and contact information. In addition, there will be ongoing follow-up to any gallery owners or collectors with whom we initiate contact.

The cost to participating artists will be $100.00. This will be due upon acceptance into the publication. If an artist withdraws after the production of the project has begun, a penalty of $750.00 (representing the actual cost of producing a page in the publication) will be billed.

A selection committee that includes a commercial gallery operator and an official from a government export agency will choose the participants from the pool of applicants. In addition to artistic quality, the selection committee will assess the export readiness of the applicant from a commercial point of view.

This is a great opportunity for exposure for those who are interested in exporting to the United States through commercial galleries in that country. Please be aware, however, that this market:

  • Will take time to develop
  • Can carry with it significant commercial risk (i.e. non-payment, etc)
  • Carries with it additional costs for shipping and freight forwarding, and
  • Can involve a frustrating level of red tape

However, this market also offers people:

  • Access to a huge and affluent community of collectors
  • A massive pool of potential purchasers, and
  • An opportunity to significantly increase the price received for your art.

If you want to try this market, and are serious about meeting the challenges it presents, please consider applying.

For more information, call Mark at 653.3616, ext. 27.

PRINCE ALBERT CERAMIC ARTIST INTENSIVE
The Prince Albert Council for the Arts along with the City of Prince Albert is presenting an intensive week-long ceramic sculpting intensive led by artist Anita Rocamora July 2 to 6, 2007. The classes will run from July 2 to 6, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (lunches provided) - with an open studio time available in the evening.

This workshop intensive is created as professional development for artists from Prince Albert and region. This is designed to be a chance for artists to meet and spend time exchanging ideas, drawing inspiration and learning from each other. Anita Rocamora will be working along side those taking the intensive. She will be leading discussion about issues pertinent to the participants such as development of personal imagery in your art practice and other issues brought forth by the group.

You will be working on your own projects, whether they are hand-building or thrown, keep in mind that Anita specializes in hand-built forms in case you want to draw on her specialized knowledge. You don't have to be a professional artist to take part, just have basic skills in working with clay. Materials will be provided, but if you have something you want to bring in feel free - we encourage use of white, cone 6 clay to keep contamination to a minimum.

We have the option of showing the works produced during this program in the art gallery at the Prince Albert Art Centre for about a week in July.

Please call Judy McNaughton at 306.960.9020 to register. Once you are registered, you can send a cheque for $100.00 made payable to the "Prince Albert Council for the Arts" to ensure your place in the workshop.
