BIGGEST NEWS OF THE YEAR!
MARK STOBBE WANTS YOUR ATTENTION. If you haven't heard yet, all SCC Members are invited to participate in a unique marketing opportunity in the United States. The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is the most prestigious exhibition of Fine Craft art in the United States, and this year, Canada is the "Guest Country."
YOU CAN BE A PART OF THIS HISTORICAL EVENT. We will be producing a very special, glossy red, attention-getting 9” x 9” catalogue promoting a maximum of 20 Saskatchewan Fine Craft artists and their work (in addition to the three participants - Melvyn Malkin, Megan Broner and Rod & Denyse Simair). If you want to be included in this exquisite publication, please complete the attached application form and return it to Mark by noon, Monday July 9th (e-mail: scc.director@shaw.ca; phone: 306.653.3616, ext. 27, fax 306.244.2711). This is a firm deadline – no applications will be accepted after this time.
Participating artists will receive a full page in the publication. This will include a representation of a sample of work, a picture of the artist in an action pose “working” with a completed piece, a short artist’s statement, and contact information. In addition, there will be on-going follow up to any gallery owners or collectors with whom we initiate contact.
The cost to participating artists will be $100.00. This will be due upon acceptance into the publication. If an artist withdraws after the production of the project has begun, a penalty of $750.00 (representing the actual cost of producing a page in the publication) will be billed.
A selection committee that includes a commercial gallery operator and an official from a government export agency will choose the participants from the pool of applicants. In addition to artistic quality, the selection committee will assess the export readiness of the applicant from a commercial point of view.
ALERT READER OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Doug Cox , the winner of the "Alert Reader of the Week" award. Last edition's obvious intentional error was Charley's title, "King of Korrection." If you see what you consider to be a typo, send it to Colin Wallace, Publications Coordinator. A special honourable mention goes to Cathryn Miller who identified a juicy, genuine error; we had welcomed you all to, "LET'S PARYT!!!!!" instead of "LET'S PARTY!!!!!"

LET'S PARTY!!!!!!!!
The Alberta Craft Council has come up with a format for a very successful series of Studio Parties – which are great fun, build the Craft community, and provide exposure for Craft people.
Good ideas are meant to be copied.
Here’s how the studio parties work:
- Craftspeople with studio space or studio space/homes that are suitable for parties agree to host the party (and determine the number of people that makes the party “just right” for their space).
- The Craft Council sells tickets to the party for $20. All proceeds are given to the hosting artist to pay for wine, food, and the other expenses.
- The format of the party is up to the host – it can include a demonstration, an exhibition, live music or other entertainment, or just good food and conversation.
- Tickets are marketed to potential buyers and others interested in Craft. It has proven to be a very good way to build exposure in a modest, targeted way.
We’d like to give this concept a try in the fall. If you are interested in exploring being a studio party host, give Mark a call at 653.3616, ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@shaw.ca.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCC MEMBERS
MARKETING OPPORTUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES [Download PDF Application Form]
The SCC, with the support of the Trade Routes Program of Heritage Canada, is offering a unique marketing opportunity to Saskatchewan Fine Craft Artists who are interested in receiving exposure in the United States market.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is the most prestigious exhibition of Fine Craft art in the United States. The annual event (running November 8 to 11) attracts 24,000 high-income and influential patrons drawn from all the major financial and cultural centers along the Atlantic Seaboard. It draws a large contingent of commercial gallery operators searching for new artists and work.
This year, Canada is the “guest country” at this show. A total of 24 Canadian Fine Craft artists will be in attendance, including SCC members Melvyn Malkin, Megan Broner and Rod & Denyse Simair. These individuals have generously agreed to distribute marketing material promoting Saskatchewan Fine Craft to gallery owners and collectors visiting their booths.
We will be producing a very special, glossy red, attention-getting 9” x 9” catalogue promoting a maximum of 20 Saskatchewan Fine Craft artists and their work (in addition to the three participants).
If you want to be included in this exquisite publication, please complete the attached application form and return it to Mark by noon, Monday July 9th (e-mail: scc.director@shaw.ca; fax 306.244.2711). This is a firm deadline – no applications will be accepted after this time.
Participating artists will receive a full page in the publication. This will include a representation of a sample of work, a picture of the artist in an action pose “working” with a completed piece, a short artist’s statement, and contact information. In addition, there will be ongoing follow-up to any gallery owners or collectors with whom we initiate contact.
This is a great opportunity for exposure for those who are interested in exporting to the United States through commercial galleries in that country. Please be aware, however, that this market:
- Will take time to develop
- Can carry with it significant commercial risk (i.e. non-payment, etc)
- Carries with it additional costs for shipping and freight forwarding, and
- Can involve a frustrating level of red tape
However, this market also offers people:
- Access to a huge and affluent community of collectors
- A massive pool of potential purchasers, and
- An opportunity to significantly increase the price received for your art.
If you want to try this market, and are serious about meeting the challenges it presents, please consider applying.
For more information, call Mark at 653.3616, ext. 27.
This project has been made possible in part through a contribution
from the Trade Routes Contribution Program of the Department of
Canadian Heritage.
