FAREWELL

The time has arrived for me to say goodbye. The past year has been the most rewarding of my life and I have thoroughly and genuinely enjoyed meeting and working with the members of the SCC. I has been my privilege and pleasure to have worked with such a supportive, fun, and talented staff in the SCC office. Thank you for your cooperation and friendship, I hope to see you at the various craft markets and events throughout the province, and I look forward to the new ideas and energy that Gale Alaie will bring upon her return to the position of Publications Coordinator - Colin Wallace.

GALLERY OPENING TONIGHT! - Join us for the opening of the new SCC Gallery exhibition: "Transforming Light: The Power of Glass." Thirteen of the members of the Saskatoon Glassworkers' Guild will be presenting a stunning display of glass transformed by light beginning at 7:00 pm this evening.

MENDEL GALLERY EXHIBITION - "TransFIGUREment" An exploration of the artistic process utilizing the human form as a vehicle for creative expression. Shelley Kaszefski and Leslie Potter will exhibit their works at the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, from September 7 to November 12, 2007. Opening reception - Friday, September 7, at 7:00 pm.

SELL MORE AT MARKETS! - As the pre-Christmas Craft market begins to draw near, we are offering the chance to become much better at selling your work.

The SCC is contracting with Barb de la Sablonniere to offer all-day workshops on how to become more effective at presentation and sales. If numbers warrant, we will be offering one workshop in Saskatoon on Friday, September 28, and one in Regina on Monday, October 1.

Ms. Sablonniere is a published author of a wide range of articles on effective communication and selling. She has presented workshops and seminars for groups ranging from the Government of Canada to the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership to Tourism Saskatchewan to the Chamber of Commerce. Participants will receive coaching on a wide range of topics including:

  • Preparing for the show
  • Understanding non-verbal communication (both on what you are saying, and what potential customers are saying to you)
  • How to decide who’s a potential buyer (either today or down the road) and how to engage with them
  • How to close the deal and make the sale
  • Tips for future follow-up

The workshops will be tailored specifically to meet the needs of Craftspeople selling at markets. Participants will also receive a personalized workbook for future study, reference, and reminders. The SCC will be offering these workshops on a cost recovery basis. The fee will be $150 for SCC members, and $200 for non-members.

SUPPORT SCC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING GARAGE SALE! - The SCC will be holding a Craft and Art supply “garage sale” on September 8. It’s an ideal way to contribute to the success of the SCC while cleaning up your studio.

If you have any left-over supplies or equipment that you are tired of tripping over or working around, just drop the stuff off that the Craft Council. We’ll put it out for sale to aspiring craftspeople – young and old. Proceeds will be used to support SCC educational programming.

"MIX N' MELD," Exhibition at The Hand Wave Gallery - Visit the Hand Wave Gallery, 409, 3rd Avenue, Meacham from September 1 to October 4 to view the exhibition "MIX N' MELD." This will be a selection of collaborative ceramic and fibre work by Charley Farrero and June Jacobs. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 2, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. MEMBER SUCCESS NEWS

Tobi Ann Baumgartner will be presenting a solo exhibition titled "A Glorious Day" at the Portage & District Arts Centre. It will run from August 28 - September 29, 2007. The Opening Reception will be on Thursday August 30, 2007 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The exhibition will include PhotoMatte photography, as well as Painted Frame Photography. Thanks everyone!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCC MEMBERS

CALLING ALL MYOORIL MAKERS - If you are an experienced outdoor artist,with demonstrated skill in painting people of all ages, (both factual and fictional), in a variety of lifestyles, Renaissance Yorkton is looking for you!

We are inviting expressions of interest from provincial artists, for our second community mural, which will feature a large grouping of people illustrating Yorkton's colourful history. This follow-up to Grassroots, completed in 2006, will be painted on a neighbouring wall, in the downtown centre.

Specifics of the site are available on the YBID website, as of August 22, 2007. Apply to: Renaissance Yorkton, c/o 173 Roslyn Avenue, Yorkton, SK S3N 1P2, with a summary of related experience and qualifications, plus photos of your work, on or before September 20, 2007. Your info will remain on file with us for future reference, unless you enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope for its return.

Please include all contact information. Only those submissions of interest to the co-ordinating comittee will be considered for further development. This project will commence with preliminary work and community posing session completed before November of this year, with completion expected in spring of 2008.

Funding available for this mural is $25,000 including all artist fees, equipment, quality-approved materials, and maquette. The selected artist(s) will be responsible for self-insurance and will provide a budget detailing these and related aspects, including exterior surface protection.

Renaissance Yorkton will pay for advertising and promotion costs, documentation, public meetings and recognition signage. RYF, established in 2004, is a not-for-profit community organization, partnered with Yorkton Business Improvement District, dedicated to bringing art to the heart of Yorkton.
